'i' stands for influence

What sort of leader of your business are you? Do you know?

Have you taken the time to truly understand what causes you to make the decisions you make, to behave they way you do, to take the actions you take? Because it is going to dictate the success of your business.

The science of mind and behaviour is an element of companies that is often neglected or simply not understood as to the level of impact. It dictates how leaders get on with the rest of the management team and how likely a company is built for success.

The bit "they" don't tell you about when you are the entrepreneur is, that not everyone is going to love your idea as much as you. And oftentimes it is the founder that is hampering progress, through not being open to another way of thinking or doing. I know, how rude. So how will you deal with that, because your approach is fundamental to getting people, clients, staff, stakeholders on-side?

Knowing who you are, being honest with yourself as leader and founder of your organisation, is crucial. Are you a steadfast influencer, where you generate excitement while striving for team accomplishments? Or are you more of a dominant leader who influences through assertiveness and insistence?

If you do tend to dominate, having a steadfast 2nd-in-command who can smooth the path and translate how the team can achieve the overall goal can be hugely beneficial. If you over-think the details and it blocks progression, bolster your management team with an influencer who generates excitement and helps the team understand why detail is important. If you tend to hide your light, then bring in a more dominant character who will bolster you, your skills and encourage you to be proud of what you are trying to achieve so that you can communicate with confidence the problem you are solving.

Whether you want it or not, as the founder, everyone looks to you to see what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, in times of success but more often in times of crisis. It is up to you to get the business idea accepted and approved. You set the tone.

By taking the elements of your leadership style, that could be seen as blocks to progression, and turning them into positives is the best thing you can do as a leader. Know who you are. Own it. Own your values, your fears and utilise that information to the benefit of the company. Ask yourself whether you want to be in charge or successful. It will always be your company, your idea, but consider the fact that not all founders make the best CEOs. See the bigger picture.

'i' stands for influence. Use it well. Use it wisely. Use it to your company's advantage. You will be a much better founder for it and your company will progress and have a greater chance of the success you are looking to build.
